MANDALA IV ROOT 2 RECTANGLE 1998 49” x 40”
The more rectilinear aspects of the mandala inspire this quilt.
The square root of two is an irrational number, not at all expressible as a finite, rational decimal number. But it can be determined exactly and easily by simply delineating the diagonal of a square of side 1.
Further, it is one of several proportions that self replicates in ever-increasing or ever-decreasing sizes. All the rectangles in this quilt are root-2 rectangles, having been generated by the first one drafted. |
