Brubeck was the first jazz pianist to filter through the walls blocking my access to modern types of music during my high school years. I still play and teach Brubeck’s “Blue Rondo à La Turk” as well as the Mozart “Rondo à la Turk” that inspired the former piece.
I began this quilt with some of the same parameters that Brubeck might have used to organize his metrically ground-breaking piece: it will be Blue and it will be Round. Why didn’t I choose 9 divisions of the circle? I still scratch my head on that question.
